Get away for a stay in beautiful South Wales – Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel
Nestling in the heart of the Monmouthshire countryside and located a short stroll from the picturesque town of Usk, the Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel is a popular family-run country house hotel offering relaxation and a high level of personal service.
Home to Clarkes Restaurant, its reputation for home-made locally sourced dishes makes it the perfect combination for a comfortable stay with excellent food. The spacious and immaculate gardens and friendly team of staff complete all that is necessary for the perfect stay.
From the four-poster bridal suite to family rooms, all guest bedrooms are individual in character and furnished to a high standard- most having views of the hotel’s spacious gardens. Perfect for that short break away to re-charge your batteries or enjoy a family break visiting some of the many tourist attractions in South Wales, the hotel also offers a self-contained cottage that sits within the Hotel grounds. Of the 27 en-suite bedrooms in the hotel, there is a room with wheelchair and passenger lift access close by. Some rooms are pet-friendly for those wishing to bring their four-legged family members.
The Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel is the perfect base to explore the sights of Monmouthshire and Southern Wales in your leisure time. The borderland where King Arthur ruled, the Romans bathed, the Normans built castles, pilgrims worshipped and Turner sketched. Today, Usk is where grapes ripen, salmon leap, markets bustle and culture thrives – and a large chunk of it straddles the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s no wonder bikers, hikers, anglers and paddlers love this area.
Located within a dozen miles of the hotel are many excellent golf courses including the Celtic Manor that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2010.
Usk sits on one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country, the River Usk. A regular winner of Wales in Bloom, the pretty and well cared for town, hosts a colourful Open Gardens weekend in June and the popular Usk county show in September. Usk town is a short walk over the river bridge from the hotel. Here you will find a selection of shops, Usk Castle, The Museum of Rural Life, and a Town Trail which includes 28 sites of historic interest.
Going a little further afield, should you wish to add a historical flavour to your visit, Monmouthshire has many attractions including Castles, Roman settlements, Castles, Tintern Abbey and of course reminders of the area’s industrial heritage such as Big Pit mining museum in Blaenavon. The Brecon Beacons National Park and Sugar Loaf mountain are only a short drive away should you wish to partake of the many walks available.
The capital city of Wales, Cardiff is within a 30 – 40 minute drive. With easy access to the M4 within minutes of leaving the hotel, you can explore some of the many visitor attractions that make our capital city so great. The Principality Stadium hosts many sporting fixtures and concerts, Cardiff Castle is the perfect place to explore and we recommend a visit to St Fagans Musuem on the outskirts of Cardiff where you can find out about the history of Wales. For shoppers, St Davids Shopping Centre is one of the many places to have some retail therapy. Here you will find many designer shops, high street brands, quaint shopping malls and places to eat.
