Happy Anniversary

This sentimental poem was written in celebration of Irene Kerr’s upcoming 40th wedding anniversary on March 21st.

Happy Anniversary

We met at a dance it soon led to romance
A tale of the orange and green
Brought together by fate we soon made a date
Our future remained to be seen

After months of courting likely cavorting
Eventually making some plans
Involving a ring a day in the spring
All details declared in the ‘Banns’

To cross an ocean was a plausible notion
To leave and start a new life
Say  goodbye to The Troubles buildings left in rubble
Begin again as husband and wife

After we married by plane we were carried
To a country true north and free
Where winters were cold the truth be told
A test of endurance to be

We settled down in this beloved cowtown
The city of Calgary
To complete our joy had a girl and a boy
Our very own family

All through the years with laughter some tears
We raised our children with love
Every milestone was met more to come yet
With definite help from above

Both of them wed it has to be said
We’ve had such a lot of fun
The time has just flown our family has grown
With the birth of our little grandson

It’s been quite  a while  since we left that isle
Our birthplace across the sea
To come out west to Alberta’s best
Our chosen sanctuary

That long ago vow which brings us to now
A special place to be
To honour that date and celebrate
Our ’40th wedding anniversary’
