Sunday Morning Song

Sunday Morning Song

The birds were singing loudly this morning when I awoke
Perhaps they mourned their cousins up north who had died in the dark dense smoke
One by one they sang what seemed a sad lament
While others listened attentively quietly content

Perhaps they told of the animals caught up in the fire
Trying to escape through the forest which was now a funeral pyre
Families of elk and white tails running for their lives
Every creature leaving their cosy dens and hives

Cougars, lynx and bobcats bears of every size
Eagles hawks and tiny fowl taking to the skies
Others would be trapped unable to outrun the blaze
As the wind changed direction their home seemed like a maze

The singing is in the distance now as others take up the song
About the burning forests and everything that went wrong
Oh Mother Nature hear us we are praying for lots of rain
To douse the fires still burning and save the forests that remain
