It’s all about me

This poem was written by Irene Kerr, who has been enjoying retirement now for six months, and this is how she feels ….

It’s All About Me

How do you like retirement?
Is a question I’m often asked,
What do you do with yourself all day?
I answer  ‘I’m having  a blast’.

I no longer have an alarm clock
Wake me up at an ungodly hour,
Tempted to call in a ‘ sickie’
As I make my way into the shower.

I don’t need to curse at the weather
When I open the front door to leave,
Nor dodge in and out of the traffic
A definite personal pet peeve.

Overtake those eighteen wheelers
To avoid them kick up a stone,
Only to be struck by a boulder
From where it’ll never be known.

Or need to drive when it’s storming
In snow or incessant rain,
Shout obscenities at my poor car
When it begins to hydroplane.

I can enjoy a car ride
Avoid the dreaded rush hour,
No need to speed in the fast lane
Remember I have the power.

Spend all day in my pyjamas
Watch TV as long as I like,
Don’t you miss all your co-workers?
My answer is ‘get on your bike’.

There’s no ‘need’ to do laundry
Get chores done by a set date,
Who cares if there’s dust on the table
Any e-mails they can just wait.

My social calendar’s empty
Accept any invites –  very few,
I go out whenever I want to
It’s whatever i care to do.

Aren’t you lonely or bored now?
Some enquiries come to my mind,
As I glance in my rear view mirror
Leaving the city behind.

To enjoy the freedom of being
A happy and relaxed retiree,
Finally at a new chapter
Where life is ‘all about me’.
