Anybody out there finding themselves on their own

Hi, I'm a widow and very happily retired. After losing my husband almost ten years ago I'm now accustomed to living alone.

That doesn't mean I don't need someone I can share my thoughts, good conversation and lots of laughs with. I am now 75 but still lively minded in body and soul. I'm not fuddy duddy or miserable.

I would really appreciate someone who enjoys life to become a good friend. Is that someone you?

I'm a bit similar to you, became a widower 7 years age, never got used to it, now trying to make new worthwhile friends. I hope I can meet someone wh is on 'the same page'. When your marriage has been long and happy, you begin to realise the enormity of what it was in your life. Regards Gordon.

Hi Flower41,
Im new on here so a bit late responding but hopeful you will want to chat still with any newbies? Im 80, still 30-ish inside, outside is a bit different although Im faring quite well. Active despite a little arthritis and of a happy disposition, although I do still like an occasional moan. Live alone and enjoy it, have a beautiful daughter living in Kent and a beautiful son living also in Kent. Love animals and support many charities, shopping, conversation frivolous and serious. Also enjoy my weekend bottle of red wine. I live in south east London. Is that enough for anyone?

Hiya, I too am on my own, not nice this time of year when everyone seems to be celebrating ! I wish people Happy New Year rather than do the Merry Xmas stuff

77 next birthday, very positive attitude, have had a 'lively' life, you name it - been there, am hoping to do more next year.

I value friendship, my bestie lives 20 miles away so have not yet visited her in Wales
Love the Internet, it has opened up a whole new way on conversing with people

If you want to drop me a line

Hi Doxiemom, Sounds like you keep busy with school runs etc. My grandchildren are mostly able to either drive themselves to 6th form now. Only one needing taking and picking up. I don't live close anymore. Had the two youngest over last Saturday, it was a great treat. Are you all set for Christmas? I swear it comes around faster each year. Hope you have a great time .

Yes, I've been on my own for five years now and although it has its "down" moments overall I prefer it.
How about you?
Response from Flower41 Original Poster made on 18th Mar 2023 10:01:57
Hi Oom, I suppose for some, finding themselves on their own doesn't bother them. For me I think initially I was thrown into practical mode and finding my direction over time became a natural process. I still miss my partner. I lead a fairly full life. I love being retired and being able to do what I want when I want with no work commitments. I love seeing my kids and my grand kids and those times are so very special to me. Life alone however goes on. I'm happy when I wake up I am able to get up and go. Many people can't. I love company and going out. Having someone say good morning, how are you!! I'm not an island. I don't wish to be an island. I'm glad you are content Oom and wish you happy. Flower 41
Response from bobbysmithley made on 19th Mar 2023 05:30:42
Hi Oom,

Human beings are social creatures- it's in our dna and everyone's physical health depends on connecting mentally with people. While some people may feel they prefer being on their own, they usually have friends or family with whom they maintain regular contact and so don't have the experience of true isolation. In reality, people who think they prefer to be alone still have the social support networks in place that provide emotional and mental well-being.

Complete isolation can be extremely overwhelming and can quickly lead to various negative consequences for mental & physical health. If you find yourself in a situation where you are truly alone for extended periods, it's essential to seek out social connections to maintain a healthy life. Sadly, in 2023 onwards, social media is destroying opportunity & it's very dangerous as even forums like this one are now few & far between.
Response from bobbysmithley made on 19th Mar 2023 05:35:48 > @Flower41
so glad to hear you have kids & grand kids & people saying good morning to you. That is often all it takes to maintain mental health. From the perspective of someone who has actually experienced isolation to the degree I didn't have any of that- I'd go to the shop desperate for a 2 minute conversation at the checkout only to be ignored by staff, isolation really is different & I hope you never go through it. Your body physically hurts & the only thing you can think about is finding someone -- anyone -- to talk to. Even if it was the worst dictator in the world guilty of war crimes, my body was that desperate for a conversation. I never imagined being like that before. It's hard to imagine when you have never been isolated- you think it'll be ok but it really isn't. It's clear to me that socialisation is written in our DNA. It's very strange what it does to you.

I too feel desperate at times.
My situation is complicated. And too deep to go into right now.
But I just wanted to say I understand

Please reply if you want.

Really interesting to read what you say and so agree. Since being widowed I started volunteering for the NT - guiding and also running the bookshop. I chat to people coming in and one day a woman was paying me for her choice and she said how nice it was to be able to come in and talk to someone as well..a rare occurrence these days! Your words reminded me of her...and I understand as I am alone most of the time myself - family all up north a 4 hour min drive away. So I recommend volunteering to anyone feeling the same...I meet lots of lovely people and the young staff are so kind too...Always something different going on and quite a lot of fun and laughter. Makes all the difference! We could do with a specified Chat Room where we can all come and find each other when we need a chat! I didn't know there was one on here as such...and I seem to have difficulty finding my way back to where I was every time I come on...despite noting the route to follow..it seems to change.
Hope to meet you all again at some point folks! Groping my way around like a lost soul! 🙂
Response from CaroB4 made on 22nd Sep 2023 17:59:56 > @bobbysmithley
So agree with you! Unless there is a group of like minded people living in the same area and able to meet up for coffee initially - to get to know each other...it can be very difficult. Friendship sites need promoting more - as so many on the Dating Sites do not want to spend time emailing to get to know each other first, It seems more sensible to me as often find incompatibilities through writing! And if they can't be bothered to write - well perhaps they are not looking for the same thing anyway!

It could be, I am new on here, dont know my way around. My wife passed in 2015, and I,m a bit fed up of no one to chat with, or even meet and share a coffee and a gas. I,m Gordon and I live in Paignton, sunny old Devon.

I came from Birmingham to Paignton. We ran a holiday hotel for about 18 seasons, sold it to retire and spend time having a mooch round the country, I now live alone in my bungalow, 4 offspring, one is in Adelaide, all made good lives and happy. Regards Gordon
