Fables and Sayings

I love amusing sayings, fables, aphorisms and apophthegms, though to be honest I'm not clear about the distinction between the last two. 1) Aesop's fables I find appealing and sometimes quote them to promote a rethink. For example it is quite common here to seek to persuade others to a point of view in very strong terms. This tends to bring to mind the story of the sun and the north wind. In case you don't know it, it can be found at http://mythfolklore.net/aesopica/milowinter/141.htm. 2) "The louder he talked of his honour, the faster we counted our spoons". For years I quoted this as originating with P. G. Wodehouse but discovered recently that it is usually attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. A further search found a similar idea in James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, 1791. 3) I learned this one many years ago when studying Spanish and will quote it that language. For those who don't understand it, Google Translate does a perfectly adequate job. Here goes:- "Amigos y libros, pocos, buenos y bien conocidos."
