Historical Fiction
Watch this postHello everyone. I have recently retired so am enjoying having all the time to read without interruption. Someone who was visiting left a Victoria Hislop book about Crete and I loved it! That led to finding another of her books and the second one I read was about Grenada during the civil war. (The Return). I then read “The Thread” which was about Greece in the second world war. Timely, considering what is happening there right now.
Now that I am living on a pension, I find I put money into my gardens rather than into travel, so love reading the history of some of the places I visited in my younger days. I just moved to a small community and order my books on line from my local library rather than go to Chapters ( the closest one is 1 1/2 hours away ) to enjoy a latte while I browse. It’s much less expensive this way as well.
I would love to chat with other seniors who like history and have traveled to some of the places they are reading about.
It will take me a while to navigate this site but I have lots of time.

I love books with a strong sense of place, particularly those I've visited! I've read a few books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, set in Barcelona and I've read all of the Victoria Hislop novels that you mentioned and thoroughly enjoyed them. Last summer I read her latest one, 'The Sunrise', set in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion of the 1960s. I have to say I was a bit disappointed and didn't find it nearly as gripping as the earlier ones though. I've also recently finished the 'biography' of Jerusalem by Simon Sebag Montefiore.... a bit of a hefty tome but very readable and absolutely fascinating!
