How can I remove a giant phormium?

Does anyone know a cheap/easy way to remove a huge phormium which has taken over my front garden? I have asked a gardener and he is talking about bringing in a digger! Could I just cut away the frons from the ground level from the outstide and make it much smaller?

Depends on whether you want it fully removing, in which case, if it is that big, your gardeners suggestion is a good one. If you want to keep it, then thinning it down might work, or at least reduce its size for removal....
