Home Improvement and DIY

There is a minefield of home-improvement ideas and so many people need more information on what works well, who to avoid and how to do things that improve our home. It maybe we are downsizing and need advice, it maybe we're considering home improvements to accommodate visiting grandchildren or just because we now have more time on our hands to do the jobs we never had time for.

You could try Polski Konstruktorzy.com. They are a bunch of Eastern Europeans, and we all know how wonderful they are, don't we?
Good luck!

Good afternoon. New to this forum. Was wondering how members selected tradesmen / women for repairs and maintenance around the house? Are sites such as Checked and Vetted and Checkatrade useful? Thanks

I have used My Builder for finding tradespeople and have been pleased with the standard of work. There are reviews for each builder which I read first. I know these are not always accurate but if a particular tradesperson gets a number of bad reviews then I steer clear.

Many years ago we were 'doing up' a little terraced house, bought for a song because it had so many things that needed repairing.
One of the roof purlins was split, causing the roof tiles to sag, so, his nibs hit on a plan of action.
We went up into the attic with the car jack and some blocks of wood. Mr know it all then placed the jack onto the rafters and started jacking away like a madman. There was lots of creaking and groaning ot tortured timbers, but little or no movement.
Then suddenly the bedroom ceiling below us collapsed and we were dumped, unceremoniously, on to the bed below.
It took ages to clear up the mess, Mr Know it all blamed everything and everyone but himself. We sold the house to an immigrant family of 24 a few weeks later.
