New solo traveler

I just sold everything and I'm traveling the world. Finding out it's too expensive to solo cruise, so looking for friends who want to split costs. I don't have anything planned yet, but I do want to take a world cruise at some point with some one I get along with enough to be a roommate.

Hi, Kevin, I have just read your post, and was interested in the trip that you
are planning, I have been on 5 overland trips, and been to all the places that
you are going to visit, Unfortunately I am now 74 years old and although I am
still fit and active, my travel insurance costs put me out of the market to make
your fantastic trip, I hope that you can get enough people together to make it
a worthwhile project, I can assure any prospective travel buddies that they
will have a great and enjoyable time, good luck and safe travels, Terry.

Hi Terry, I just joined and am waiting approval. I am a 73 yr old woman wanting to go on a few bucket list journeys. I'm not sure of your location but I am willing to fly to Europe. If you are still interested in traveling without romantic involvement let me know.

Hi littleoldme, thank you for your message, I was pleased to hear that you
want to do a bit of travelling, and that one place on your so called bucket
list ( never did like that saying, as I always think that death must be near
for me wanting to do something before it’s too late )
Anyway South Africa is a great place to visit, I was in Cape Town last October and had a great time, I have been many times and always stay in
a backpackers hostel. I live in Southampton on the South coast of England
and am 74 ( coming up 75 ) years old ( or young if you prefer ) I am planning an overland trip in late November this year, it is with a company
called Absolute Africa, and will be starting in Nairobi, Kenya and going
through Uganda and Tanzania, and will be visiting major game parks, such
as the Masai Mara, the Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti conservation
area, so a lot of wildlife to be seen. You can Google Absolute Africa to see
what overlanding is all about. And you may like to get back to me when
you know more about this form of travel. Take care and I look forward to
hearing from you, all best wishes, Terry.

This sounds like an amazing adventure. November is far enough away to work on the logistics. I went to the Absolute Africa site but couldn't find that trip.
Not sure how safe travel to that portion of Africa is and is November during the rainy season?

Good morning littloldme, from a cold Southampton, I must admit that I was not expecting a reply, as the trip to Africa on an overland truck is not
for everyone, still I am pleased that you did get back to me. If you go back
to the Absolute Africa website, when you see ‘ choose your safari ‘ look at
the trips lasting between 4 to 7 weeks, my trip is a 30 day trip form Nairobi
to Nairobi on a loop, you can then view the trip and get dates and also read all about overlanding. I have done 5 such trips and never had any sort
of trouble in Africa, of course you are with a large group of people that will
give you security in numbers.
My email address is [email protected], I find it easier to talk
via email, as you can go into more detail.
PS the trip is called East Africa Encompased, take care all best wishes,
Terry.

I could use some help finding out if I have any replies. Is there a way to get notifications for replies. Also can I view another member's profile.

I'm looking at the logistics to get for getting there, How are you planning to get from South Hampton to Nairobi?

Good evening Judy, so pleased to hear from you again, you seem to be
getting on faster than me.
I will get a National Express coach to get from Southampton to Heathrow
Airport in London, then fly to Nairobi, the flight takes about 8 hours from
here to Kenya, when I get to Nairobi, I will get a taxi to the hotel or camp
site, depending on where the truck will be. I will travel the day before the
trip starts to give me time to get there.
You would probably have to travel from the States to Nairobi, so will avoid
having to fly to London first.
I hope that you have read all about overlanding, as I have said it is not for
everyone, but I do feel confident that you would have got up to speed.
If you have viewed the actual trip, you will see that it starts on the
28th of November and finishes on the 27th of December, so if you do
decide to take the plunge, it will mean that you will spend Christmas in
the Masai Mara in Kenya.
Well its 10.30pm here, so will leave you in peace for tonight, I will always
be here if you need any more information, take care, Terry.

Hello Talo. I have just joined, in fact the ink isn't even dry yet. I could have written your note myself because more solo travel is on the cards for 2023.
Before we go any further, let me put a few cards on the table. Firstly, I am a man, and always have been, and intend to remain.. I suppose you need to mention the last bit as I see you are now able to select your own gender as you see fit. I think this sort of thing ridiculous beyond words.
I am 79 years old. I turn 80 at the end of July, just 2 days after Sir Mick Jagger. So if I am to get back on my international bike, this is the time.

I have done quite a bit of travel in my time, most of it solo and in Asia, with some parts of Western Europe. I won't try to show off by listing the places I have been.
After I retired I took myself off to China, PR of, for 18 months on and off teaching English to pay my way, and I have visited again several times. I love the place and make no bones about it. Unfortunately Covid has put the Kybosh on any thoughts of returning. I'm disappointed, as I have an ex student friend in Hangzhou, who has married and had her first daughter since I was last there.

A little more about me, so you can judge a little better if we might make good companions. (God, I hope you're not a man).

It's probably relevant that you should know that I'm Australian. Born in Sussex, but in all other respects Australian. I am still married, but my wife and I don't live together as we both have health issues. She, more so than me, so she barely gets out of our daughter's house where she lives. We are still on good terms after 55 years, and counting. She is only 15 minutes away on my new electric bike, so I see them all regularly, in fact we have just enjoyed a family Christmas.

My choices for destinations, I would prefer Asia, but the world is our oyster.
I was thinking along the lines of Korea, Japan, Viet Nam or Hainan Island. Even a combination. Apart from Hainan, I have visited all before, but not in any great depth. A cruise taking in some or all of the above might work.

A European cruise, especially Scandinavia would be of interest too.

You will be bored stiff by now, and I'm desperate for a cuppa, so a bientot.
