Pneumonia vaccine - side effects

Hello - As I am now 65 (only just!) I asked for the pneumonia vaccine - just to be on the safe side before going on holiday. I have had countless vaccines in my life and have never experienced side effects. I had the jab a couple of weeks ago and have not felt right since - low level viral/cold type infection which has infected a tooth (may not be linked) and caused sinusitis. I have not been ill at all for the whole winter and I am sure this is linked to the vaccine. The nurse told me I might feel I was coming down with a cold/viral infection but it wouldn't develop - not true. I have since read online that the vaccine has been linked to increase in bacterial injections. Now I wish I had never had it - I usually do my research beforehand but didn't in this case. It looks like I will now have to take antibiotics to get rid of tooth infection/sinusitis. Has anyone else experienced this? Or any other side effects or none at all.

I had this vaccine too, fortunately with no ill effects whatsoever, same goes for the flu vaccine (been having that for years and years).

Oh well maybe it is just bad luck - I am not going to bother reporting to GP as they will say there is no evidence that maybe I had the infection anyway. As far as I can find out online a very small percentage of people have developed infections after the vaccine (about 2% or less). Just have to hope it clears up with antibiotics (given for wisdom tooth infection which I don't think is connected to the jab). I am beginning to think more and more things go wrong as you get older!!! Hopefully, I will be Ok for my holiday in September.

If less than 2% develop infections after the vaccine you may just be unlucky to be within that 2%. I am sure it is self limiting and you will feel fine for your holiday in September. However, if symptoms persist you should see your GP as it may just be a coincidence it began just after the vaccine.

Hi moondreamer, I've also had this vaccine with no side effects other than slightly off colour for a few days. The vaccine doesn't contain any live bacteria and as the pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections you did the right thing in having it. If you feel you are experiencing worse side effects than expected then let your GP know so they can report them through the Yellow Card System which is run by the MHRA. Alternatively, if you know the make and batch number of the vaccine you received you can report this yourself through the same system (it can be done on-line). It's still worth letting your GP know you have experienced problems for their future reference. Hope this has helped and you feel better soon.
