Hi  - Going to Vienna in September. Has anyone got tips for getting about & seeing the sights in comfort without too much walking? Any advice welcome for doing a trip on the Danube, like a short day trip or evening buffet cruise?

Vienna is a beautiful city. There is a tram which goes round the Ring Road ( Ringstrasse ) and this passes many of the sites.
I would recommend getting the equivalent to the Oyster card think it is called the Vienna Card.. You can get them for 3 or 8 days and then you can hop on and off buses, trams, or metro trains. You can get them from the tourist or info places at the airport at information Buros and maybe at hotels. The underground train service maps are very easy to follow and get you around Vienna easily. Favourite places will be Stephensplatz for the Cathederal, Rathaus for the tow hall. schonbrunn for the wonderful palace and grounds. You might like the zoo near Schonbrunn where a few months back some panders were born. It is the oldest zoo in Europe. Mariahilfe Strasse is one of the main shopping streets. For a treat visit Hotel Sacher for the famous Chocolate and cream cake. This can also be found in other Konditorei ( cake shops ) and cheaper.. For and old fashioned Viennese Coffee house go to the Tribune near the Burgtheater where they traditionally serve the coffee with a glass of water with a teaspoon balanced on the glass. Be warned visiting Grinzing, the wine growing area of Vienna is worth visiting but is quite expensive. Great for wine,, music and joining in the singing. Other wine areas are Nussdorf a bit further out but slightly cheaper. Would recommend boat trip to Melk and its beautiful Abbey on top of an outcrop beside the Danube. Probably get a coach trip there as well. Going by river you will pass Durnstein where one of our kings was imprisoned. Richard II.? He was rescued by our pop minstrel, Blondin. Give my regards to Vienna. I love visiting it and I am sure you will to

Sorry I did not notice the date you posted your request. I have only been on here for a couple of months so could not have replied anyway. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Vienna.
