We will take care of ourselves thank you

Like most people as we grow older my friend Mo and I have pondered on our future, especially if we acquire age related diseases. Its been well documented making good and the right decisions decline as we get older and then we have to rest on our children, relatives or social workers to make those decisions for us. I have four lovely children but i want to make those decisions for myself. We who have worked in many Care Homes over the years from the average home to the very expensive Residential Homes they are nearly always under staffed. Those residents that can speak up for themselves, will always fair better than those who cannot. The staff can see to all their personal needs and make sure they have their food, but every thing is hurried, because of the shortage of staff. I was employed as a activity co-ordinator, but luckily for the residents I worked full time there. Mo has worked as a carer and was brilliant even with the most confused person, she would always leave them with a big smile, she had very little time to spend with them. When she worked in clients own homes she would be just helping some one with their breakfast when her mobile would ring telling her she was wanted at Mrs smith house 2 miles up the road. We have decided we are going to choose at least eight others who have the same values has us, to rent or buy a house, so we can take care of one another, and to employ our own staff if ever needed. We wont mind any age providing they are kind and thoughtful. We are both laid back and can often see the funny side of any obstacle that has cropped up.We are both socialists, and members of the Labour Party but not very active these days.We care for others deeply, whether here in this country or abroad. Now I know many would ask why I have mentioned this, you see I want to be with like minded people, and share some of their interest too, also there are many residents who dislike other residents because they would not have mixed with them prior to them coming in to the same home. It would be like me sitting opposite a real right wing Tory, what a nightmare. Of coarse they can do the same thing. I want tranquility and optimism, still challenging the world to the end. Residential homes are closing down every week. Some councils are now auctioning the elderly of like cattle at a market. The government has no answers, so we must come up with ideas ourselves.

No I am not very brave for saying I am a member of the Labour Party I am proud to be a member and have been for 40 years/ We have come through many problems in the past and we will do again.
Regarding the number of people one would have to share a house with, it would have to be at least seven or eight people as the idea would be to take care of each other when someone is ill, so it would be shared among many more people.
We also have to be ready for any deaths that will occur, as financially we would need enough income to carry on.

Another thing would for each person to have their own solicitor.

I did a bit of care work when i was a student and came up with a similar idea for how fit and sprightly OAP's could share accommodation in order to support each other and stave off the inevitable loneliness that comes with advanced years.
My vision was for a 4 person unit with a central living room, 4 separate bedrooms with en-suite facilities, a 2 cooker and 4 fridge kitchen where the residents (who, it is hoped would become friends) could either cook communal meals, or follow their individual dietary preferences.
The beauty of such a set-up is that there would be only one gas bill, one electric bill, one water bill and one TV licence, split 4 ways.
Loneliness would be eradicated for ever, as each member would look out for each other.
The only potential stumbling block would be in matching 4 strangers with a shared vision for their respective communal futures. But, I'm sure it could be done, and crucially, without council, or government interference, or regulation.

What a great idea. Yes, I'd be up for that.

What an excellent idea Marjorie, I think it's an ideal solution to an increasing problem.
I wish you well and hope you find like minded people who will help make this happen.

You are very brave...for publicly admitting to being members of the Labour Party.
