Career change ideas

Hi, this is my first post on here, I am 56 and looking for something new, I've worked in sales most of my career both retail and direct with most of those years in a management capacity. I am currently self employed in sales but feel the time has come for something new. Two ideas I have couldn't be further apart, horticulture and counselling. Any feedback on how to approach these or any other ideas would be most welcome, thanks.

I am working on my new book showing how we over 50's have an unfair advantage over the younger set when it comes to success. I am looking for some folks like us I can interview to help illustrate some of my points. Ideally these folks would be over 50's who have made a change (In business, health, relationships, etc) and succeeded in a big way. Let's start a conversation about this.

Hi Kevwatto what about doing support work. I support 5 men in their homes, who have learning disabilities they go to work, they have girlfriends and they have a better social life than me as a support worker I support them with cooking, cleaning, shopping, finance etc etc. My work career has been cleaning, shop work and caring for the elderly and a couple of years ago I fancied a change. I had no experience working with the disabled but most companies will take on newbies as you learn on the job. And it is the best job I have ever had. Next week I am supporting one chap to the theatre, some support workers take them aboard for their holidays. The only bad part people can't handle are the shifts, they can be long and being in the disabled sector you can have challenging moments with them. But its a brilliant job.

I am not sure what a career is, if you mean a job why not go out and just get one, there are plenty for those who have a desire to work ,but if you have to start at the bottom then so be it.

In my lifetime I have met too many with management capacity, and they are often regarded as pen- pushers --- not leaders, but you take your pick

Hi Kevwatto and welcome to silversurfers. How about a taster course in college for your horticulture and/or counselling? Some years ago I did that when I wanted to change from nursing to social care.... not such a dramatic change as you have planned but I completed an HNC at the age of 48 and felt quite proud of myself..... good luck with whatever you decide.
