Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

Hello To All. My name is Michael, and I'm 66 years of age. Retired, and residing in Southern California. I have many interests ranging from angling, to zoology. I hope to meet new friends here on Silver surfers, and share many wonderful comments, and ideas. Hope to hear from you, and share our journey of life, and enjoy all that there is.
Response from Wilf made on 15th Dec 2015 00:01:15
Hi Michael66 and think you will find many friends on Silversurfers-most are Brits but some Australians and new Zealanders as well I have chatted to. How is the weather in sunny California-wet, drizzle and cloudy here in the UK!
Response from dungarvan lady made on 16th Dec 2015 05:02:43
You seem to have many interests, I have a grandson who spends much of his spare time fishing, either in UK or in France and now I am in Eire he is planning on a fishing holiday here especially as I live on a Quay. He intends to be a copywriter and he is a very outgoing pleasant young man. My Grandson is Michael also. What does Zoology entail?? Sounds very interesting. I am sure you will hear from plenty of Silver Surfers. Good luck.

you are only 66 you also have had the advantage of going to university, so you are educated therefore you could give classes to would be uni students (my grandson does this as well as training to be a sports journalist he earns £20 per hour. If you did something similar. You love dogs, look after somebody elses dogs whilst they work and you will make friends also the dogs can run around with their new doggie friends. Your daughters are probably busy with jobs or children could you have the children around to your place once or twice a week and give their parents some free time. Have you tried homeopathic treatment for your spondylosis or reiki? I hope you can find something that will help you from feeling so alone but in my experience nobody is going to wave a wand and make it better you are the one who should join a local group, or be a volunteer or advertise for eccentric dog owners to join you in your walks. I am 78 left my country to live in Ireland for a new experience which I love, met some wonderful folk here and we laugh ALOT so just join a group or whatever,or have coffee mornings at your house with the eccentric dog owners. best wishes alice

What do you all think of the 'refugee' crisis that is engulfing Europe, are you scared for your grand children?
Response from sandyt made on 11th Sep 2015 16:53:22
I'm more concerned about how it will effect every one of us children and adults .Isnt it such a human tragedy tho celtwitch
Response from Aqua made on 29th Sep 2015 17:55:21
Hello Celtwitch,
No, our grandchildren are well prepared for this generation I think! If I remember,my very own mother worrying about my coping skills in how the world was when we were growing up in one word ' adaptable ' that was how she prepared me. Sure our challenges are different, but then so is our thinking! ✌
Response from dungarvan lady made on 16th Dec 2015 04:25:50
I WORRY FOR MY GRANDCHILDREN IN LONDON ESPECIALLY THE ONE WHO IS TRAVELLING ON TUBE EVERYDAY TO UNI. THE WORLD HAS CHANGED AND UNFORTUNATELY I BELIEVE THE MR.BLAIR AND MR. BUSH SHOULD HAVE LEFT IRAQ ALONE. THE BOMBING OF INNOCENT PEOPLE CAUSED THE CRISIS IN THAT COUNTRY AND PRODUCED ISIS. UNFORTUNATELY MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED AND OTHERS HAVE LOST FAMILY AND HOMES I FEEL VERY VERY SORRY FOR THE REFUGEES WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO FLEE THE BOMBING MANY OF THEM LOSING THEIR LIVES AND ALSO THEIR CHILDREN'S LIVES. IT IS A TRAGEDY FOR ALL. I FEEL SAD THAT THE REFUGEES WILL BE TREATED WITH SUSPICION AS BEING ISIS MEMBERS. EIRE IS TAKING IN 5000 WHICH IS SMALL COMPARED WITH SOME COUNTRIES. HOWEVER, EIRE HAS A SHORTAGE OF HOUSING FOR THE PRESENT POPULATION AND I FEAR THAT THERE MAY BE TROUBLE IF REFUGEES GET HOUSES THAT SHOULD BE ALLOCATED TO THE IRISH HOMELESS. DUBLIN IS FULL OF HOMELESS IRISH CITIZENS. I THINK THE CRISIS NEEDS THE UNITED NATIONS TO WORK TOGETHER TO SORT THE MANY PROBLEMS IN A IN A FAIR WAY.

Dear Celtwitch,

So true how we become isolated after a certain age. But I've been told with all the activities for seniors it must be me. Could be. Finding it more and more difficult to reach out. Miss my old friends and somehow feel I can't replace them. I'm on the west coast of US and brothers 3000 miles away on the east coast. Regret all the time I missed with them and their families. (trying desperately to stop the "regret" syndrome.)

Your area sounds beautiful. How wonderful to wake up in the midst of hills just waiting to be climbed.

I too shall "pop" in here and there, hopefully to acquire some friendships.

Hi everyone I've just joined so saying a quick hello 🙂 I love chatting on everything and everything to males and females but am also a good listener. I have a wicked sense of humour and am known for my "no nonsense" approach to life. One of my passions is walking and I'm VERY frustrated that my knees are getting old so I can't walk uphill although I can still do 4-8 miles on flattish terrain. I have a happy family life but now my daughters are in their 20's I find myself with more time on my hands and I'd like to make a new social circle and find new interests so looking forward to chatting with everyone 🙂

A heartfelt thank you to all who have replied to my post, I was beginning to think that I was completely alone in the world, a bit like that film (can't remember what it was called) where a man wakes up one morning to find he's the only person left alive in the world...scary!

I have been reflecting on a hectic working life, during which I never seemed to be still for a moment, there was always something that just had to be done, yesterday! These days I wake up in the morning, still with that, 'what do I have to do today' feeling before quickly realising that I don'r have to do anything I don't want to do, which is both a blessing and a curse.

I would be interested to hear how some of you are dealing with your retirement days, what do you get up to, who do spend time with, what interests you, and do you still feel passionate about something in your life?

Shall we agree to log in here every day, twice weekly, or whatever, to compare notes and generally provide a 'sounding board' for whatever turns us on...or off?
Have a good day all x

No need to feel isolated when there are good kind people to chat with, Celtwitch!

I gather by your name that you are into mind body spirit?

I'm actually 61 today, and my lovely Soul Sister and I started a small business selling unique spiritual/motivational products in the last couple of years: soulfulltd.co.uk. Taking them to fairs all over South East Kent, we have made lots of lovely new friends in the MBS commmunity, and we're a very eclectic, non-judgemental bunch!

If you are willing to take a further step into the MBS world, there are lots of us out there who would welcome you to our fast-growing community. I'm sure there is one near you.

In love and light

Hi Chrissy,
Yes you just need to go into your profile page and click on profile picture and then add your picture from any of your picture albums that you have saved on your computer. You can also add other photos to the showcase forum in the same way. I've just added a couple of pictures there of my rough collie, "Cody"
Hope this is of some help.

Am in Hampshire but bit like you had many jobs due to husbands career. So have had to adjust to ten different countries in 40 years! I trained to teach age 40 which was hard but was fortunate to teach then in Copenhagen, Lesotho, botswanaand some time inUk. I realise you probably want people closer to you but am happy to email if you would like
