Prejudice and Ageism

More often than not I encounter a prejudice from my kids, new coworkers, and people in general that just because I am grey I must be a) mentally slow b) physically decrepit c) technologically incompetent.

I’m 64 and my daughter in law was surprised that I was capable of sitting on the floor! I encounter this everywhere, including the doctors office. I’m sure everyone encounters this— any clever ways of handling it?

Ironocally, it can work the other way - I look 10 years younger than the 66 I am (it's only genetic, not good behaviour!) When my doctor took some blood samples, she told me my liver function was well under par, and did i have an alcohol problem? When I had a phone comsult with a nurse postlock-down (so she couldn't see me), she was puzzled & said I was fine.! (I sit on the floor when we're out of chairs, too - my daughter's fiance asked if i was OK - but then he doesn't know me that well yet.)

I'm 53 and recently had to use a walking stick. Amazed at some of the responses I get alongside the ''looks'' of 'impatience' or 'disbelief'. If someone wants to challenge me about it then I'm more than 'ready to put them in their place' as no one tells me how I should feel as they are not me! As for ageism then definitely encountered that many a time. From employers, to bus drivers, to general public. Now I know how my mum felt when she used a mobility walker. The 'ageism' and 'prejudice' is disgusting. and doctors too...! Under 60yrs you are considered a young person, over 60 you are senile.
