Saying hello for the first time

Hello, I am 64 and live in the next city of culture. I would like to make new friends and maybe become a pen pal. After having to leave work for health reasons, it is shocking how isolated you feel and how difficult it is to involve yourself in groups when you do not drive and cannot get to meet ups. I feel I am in a black hole. So I am reaching out to people who are maybe in the same boat. I like reading, i have two rescue cats, started a new interest in photography (nothing fancy). Look forward to hopefully hearing from some of you. Thank you for reading.

Hi all. I joined hoping to make some new friends. I am married, retired , and live in the US.
I am interested in photography. I am active in our church. I like to travel especially on cruises, and I like to write. I volunteer to teach reading. So, enough about me. I look forward to hearing from some of you.

Glad you liked it Northern. My Mum was 90 when she died, ten years ago, I still miss her and sharing things with her but the love goes on and I believe we shall be reunited one day.

Hi Northern,
There's a lovely poem by David Harkins which my niece read at my dear Mum's funeral which may give you some solace:
She Is Gone
You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
Kind regards,
Carole

Hi. I'm sorry that you're feeling down - I know from experience that losing someone can be difficult to come to terms with , if you ever do. I'm happy to chat or help in any way.

Hi. I'm Jen and have just joined so don't really know what I'm doing. I'm interested in widening my interests and getting to know new people. I'm from the north east and am retired.

Hi JanW, have you investigated your local U3A? The branch I belong to covers quite a few villages and we have a central meeting in the largest village every month. All the different interest groups (Gardening, lunch group, singing, book-groups, bird-watching, creative writing etc etc) meet in pubs, each other's homes and other various locations depending on the activity and numbers of members involved. Everyone is very friendly and we operate a car-share policy so that if we are going somewhere to visit a garden or a stately home etc members all contribute towards the cost of the petrol. It might be worth looking at your local bus service - I have a free bus pass issued by Selby Council which I can use anywhere in the country (apart from Scotland) at off-peak times.

Hi Carole. Yes i did look to see where mine were. It would take two buses to jut gt there. I cannot get a free bus pass for 2 yrs, so would cost £4 day plus there is a subscription charge. I have to be careful with my money at the moment.

Hi Jan, That's a shame. My U3A only charge £12 a year for membership and you can join as many groups as you want to. Good luck in your quest to find local groups which you can join to make more friends. Does your local church have coffee mornings or meet-up groups?

I have my eye on a lunch club at my local church, it obviously charges but I can walk to it. Just taking that first step, hopefully not everyone is going to be in their 80s. Thank you for the suggestion it really helps.

Hi Jan,
Do let us know what the lunch-club is like - hope you find lots of like-minded new friends. By the way, where is the next city of culture - I can't see anything on Google!

Hi Jan have you tried your local library, they usually have a notice board with clubs, things of interest to join, and local for you. I found a book club at my library and a list of exercise classes. I hope you find some things of interest to do.

I fully understand, at 65 and recently separated, Even though I do drive it's hard to get out there again, but starting new interests is key, especially if it is possible to join a club of likeminded folks. good luck in the future.
