Travelling to Mexico. Any advice!!

Hi everyone, I'm planning to travel to Mexico with my family in February and I'm looking for some recommendations on places to visit. We are interested in exploring the history of Mexico, as well as enjoying some relaxing time on the beach. We have about two weeks to spend there. We are open to suggestions on where to go, what to see, and what to do.

One thing that I'm a bit concerned about is the language barrier. I don't speak any Spanish, and I'm not sure how common English is in Mexico. Will this be a problem for me and my family? How can we communicate with the locals and get around without much hassle? I would appreciate any advice or tips from anyone who has been to Mexico or knows the country well. TIA!

I'm pleased to hear of your family's upcoming trip to Mexico, @mrwildavson. It truly is a country with immense natural beauty, deep cultural heritage and a rich history worth experiencing. Cancun is deservedly one of the most visited beach resort towns globally, perfect for relaxation. Puerto Vallarta also on the west coast deserves consideration, excelling in watersports like diving and snorkeling. The resort town of Cabo San Lucas or simply "Cabo" at Baja California's tip offers upscale amenities and dining. Additionally, the town of Tulum features an ancient Mayan fortress amidst a Bohemian atmosphere. While English proficiency varies, English is spoken by the young and educated in tourist centers. Still, learning some basic Spanish beforehand like greetings and inquiries proves helpful. To ensure a hassle-free experience, I'd recommend engaging local guides from a reputable source.

The Yucatan Peninsula includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Merida, known for their beautiful white sand beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, and lively Mexican culture.

Ops, Nvm for my first comment. I didn't notice this comment. Any idea about hidden gems apart from the generic tourist places?

Oaxaca and Huatulco, are lovely, not as touristy as most Mexican resorts, also bear in mind, NEVER drink tap water, only bottled, another good suggestion would be pre-purchase Visa Gift cards, that way no one would have access to a bank account if lost or stolen

Yeah, pre-purchasing visa gift card is a perfect idea. And about tap water, others are also suggesting not to drink. Are the conditions really that bad?

I was also checking some articles about the places over there. I asked the same question in another forum as well. Many are telling me to visit Valladolid, so I checked some articles at Did you visit any of these cenotes? Those look like must-see places for me. Especially the Cenote Suytun, it has a different vibe to it. I was also contacting a guide from over there, and trying to squeeze out as much information as possible before finalizing.

I'm not saying that conditions are bad, but having traveled Mexico and most of the Caribbean it is not recommended to drink tap water due to the purification of running water or should I say lack of, just be aware, first time I ever went I did not know about that, luckily someone at the hotel mentioned it to me, since then have always been very careful, things like salads that are washed in tap water can also be an issue, stay or eat in well recommended places

depending where live British pounds would not be acceptable there, you would need US dollars or pesos, but dollars are very widely used

I have been there a couple of times, you need to pick places that are safe and secure, be cautious, don't carry too much currency, and leave you passports and credit cards in a safe at your hotel/accommodation apart from one that has a nominal amount on it, language is not that difficult to overcome depending where you are. there are some beautiful places, take in the ruins, the ocean is lovely, the southern tip of the country is outstanding

Can you please recommend some places? I would like to know more about them before finalizing.
