Weight Loss Surgery

Hi folks. I am a new Silversurfer member and this is actually my first post. A number of years ago I had my thyriod removed and have been on medication ever since. For various reasons my metabolism has been affected and the end result has been a steady gain in weight. I have always had a weight problem. even as a child, but now I am considered morbidly obese and getting close to 300 pounds. I have never been this heavy in my life. In conjunction with my doctor I have been watching what I eat and I exercise regularly by walking and riding my bike up to 100 miles a week. I have tried some prescription weight loss medications but none seem to help much. A recent blood test revealed that I am now considered pre-diabetic and have been prescribed a glucose lowering medication. So far it has not had much effect. My doctor has also adjusted my thyroid medication in an attempt to speed up my metabolism. During my last visit my doctor mentioned a couple other medications we might try to see if they will help with weight loss. In the event that they don't help much he asked if I might consider weight loss surgery. The alternative, I guess, would be that I may become a full blown type 2 diabetic. My question is this. Has anyone had one of these types of surgery. If so I'd like to get your comments. Did it help you? Which kind of surgery did you have? Has it had a positive or negative effect on your lifestyle. I'd like to hear from others before making any kind of decision. I have read that "gastric sleeve" surgery is now considered the gold standard. Thanks for any comments you may post.

Hi Chaz, I had full gastric bypass surgery in January 2009 at the age of 60. I was 180kg at the time and I dropped to 128kg at my best. Now, I'm 151kg and have been for some years. I was type 2 diabetic, at the time, taking lots of Metformin. The surgery completely cured my diabetes and I haven't taken any medication, for diabetes, since 2009.
The thing is, the surgery is brilliant and works as it is intended, I can only eat very small quantities of food at a time. BUT, it does not change your mental attitude to food. So, if you're a lover of sweet food (chocolate, cakes etc.) or fatty foods (cheese, crisps, pies etc.) then you will find away to consume these and your calorie intake will be high, because you will learn to 'graze' (eat small quantities, but often).
So to sum up, if your problem is that you put weight on, even though you eat as a normal person and you don't want to overindulge on bad food, this surgery will probably work for you. But if you're a foodaholic and prone to eating too much of the wrong foods, it very likely might not work.
