Anyone got any good tips to stop cats fouling garden?

Any bare patch of earth in my garden is quickly found by cats and used as their local toilet. I have tried using commercial deterrents but these have no effect. The best thing I have found is using boughs of a prickly bush I have growing in the garden but they quite often blow away and they look unsightly once the leaves have dropped off. I have had cat scarers which are supposed to work by having a high pitched tone which is unheard by us but not by cats, mice etc. I am continually buying batteries for these but they also don't have any effect. Having a dog isn't an option but I am sure this would be the answer. Any ideas?

I took David's advice and bought 2 infer-red, high frequency noice gadgets. I put them in the garden Sunday and no sign of cats since then. Let's hope it lasts.

We have a similar problem with our front garden; for some strange reason the cats round here haven't the energy to bury their poo. We scatter a citrusy smelling gel called someting like "go cat" or "scat cat". It seems to work but does get washed away when it rains. I'm told cats & dogs do not like the lemon smell.
Good luck

Hi there, moth balls can also be the best option to keep cats away from garden.

Hi being the owner of cats, I can propose that you go to Amazon and purchase something called lion droppings. Please believe me this is the truth. I have a neighbour who complained about my cat using her garden. It's roughly about £8.00 a box and you scatter it over the garden and it does work.

I'm sure this will help

Hi Patti, just before I read your post I ordered some lion dung, which has arrived. I am going to experiment in different parts of the garden, I know there is a lot of disagreement between people over cats, a very emotive subject, I own a dog and there are good and bad owners there, I like to think I am a good one, when we are out I will clean up after her, it's different with cats and I understand that but it's so frustrating when you go round the garden and find little heaps. I'll try the lion dung and hopefully it will go some way to solving the issue.

Have a good Xmas.

Hi Angela, I'm glad I have come across your post, I recently asked the same question on a, supposedly, garden friendly site at was met by torades of abuse. I have been out in the garden this last couple of days cleaning up after the cats, and am trying out a variety of suggestions, moth balls, cat pepper and small sticks pointing out of the soil. I have also ordered some lion dung.

I will post again as soon as I have some results, good luck Angela.

Cactus.
