Gospel Choirs

Hi everyone, I just want to share with you a little of what it's like being part of a Gospel choir. I belong to the Worksop Community Gospel choir, we are now increasing in numbers .The aim of this choir is to bring people together who enjoy singing, it's becoming very popular now in different areas, you don't have to be a great singer to be in one , just enjoy being with lovely people who also like to sing. We have had a good year travelling around doing concerts, this coming Friday we are singing at a charity show called Worksop has got talent, procceeds are for a young man who suffers with oncoming blindness, all the money raised will go to the blind . I will be reporting again to tell you how we got on !!

Hi, I'm a member of my local U3A Singing for Fun group and it's super. We meet twice a month in a local church which the vicar lets us use for free and then we sing at his Christmas Carol service to repay his kindness. The group sings all kinds of songs from Abba to Zip A De Do Da and we also sing at the U3A pantomime (written by the Creative Writing Group) and occasional at the monthly meeting if there is a theme which needs a song for added entertainment. Not everyone can read music but we are capable of seeing when the notes go up or down and it is good fun being part of a group and singing your heart out - I would recommend it to everyone!

Hello, I've just joined my local U3A - haven't heard back from them yet so they may have binned me already?! Not sure if we have a singing group but would definitely have a go if we do. I was a chorister as a youngster but sound more like Ozzy Osbourne now!! 😉

Hi Shanny, I think that all U3As operate slightly differently but it might be worth looking at your U3A website and seeing if the groups and their leaders are listed. That's what we do and people can sign up to getting emails from the groups they are interested in plus a weekly newsletter listing local events which other groups want to advertise. It all seems to work very well.

I am part of a "singing for well being" choir. Absolutely love it. You don't need to have a good voice (thank goodness) and no audition to get through. If feeling a little down, or after a hard day at work, it certainly lifts my spirit. Would recommend singing to all. We also put on concerts at the end of the year to raise money for charities, and sing at local residential homes. Feels good to give a little back to the local community.

I have always loved watching gospel choirs on TV, and it is on my to do list to go see one at a gospel church if I can talk someone into joining me.

I'm not a religious person, nor do I have a good voice but I do love a good old sing along, and the gospel choirs always look to be having such an enjoyable time, which would entice more people into joining them.
