I have been forgotten, I no longer exist

Today is my 58th birthday, the day started bright and sunny but very cold, I enjoyed an extended early morning walk with my dog before returning home for breakfast. There have been no phone calls, no emails, no visitors, and the postman didn't have anything for me today: the family, that I used to be a part of, have forgotten me, as have the friends I thought would always be there. This is my 20th solitary birthday, but I have become used to it and now it doesn't bother me, it really doesn't. I will be taking my dog out for a longer walk after lunch and then I will make us a nice meal before settling down to watch some TV. I didn't ever expect to be so isolated in my later years, but it's not as bad as you might think, I'm still very active and I enjoy life immensely. However, I do sometimes wonder how I came to be the solitary person I am, I guess it must be me, after all, the others can't all be wrong, can they?

I don't want to commit to working for no money, on the off chance that I might make a friend.

I would ask -- do wish to be solitary, or would you like to meet people ?
Response from celtwitch Original Poster made on 4th May 2016 18:06:41
I'm actually very sociable and gregarious by nature, it seems that now no-one wants what I have to offer, in terms of uncomplicated friendship.

Have you considered joining your local U3A? it is a great place to meet people and join groups that have similar interests to yourself -- but be warned you might find you quickly need a ten day week.

May I be the first person to wish you a very Happy Birthday celtwitch! I hope you and your dog have a lovely afternoon walk and that the sun is still shining on you both. Dogs love us unconditionally which is a wonderful thing. I am sorry that your family have no contact with you - do you have any children or brothers and sisters? Do you work still? If not what did you used to do? Hope you are making yourself something tasty for dinner!

Hello Celtwitch, Belated Happy Birthday wishes. I too am a bit of a loner, although I do have family and visit them regularly. My grandchildren also come to stay in the summer holiday. Like you I live with my dog and have daily walks, in the beautiful countryside of Mid Wales where I live. I have met a few other dog walkers and walk with one or both of them every week. I have moved about a lot, and have always made friends, but then fail to keep in touch when I move on. I often think of the lines from the poem 'If '...... "All men count with you, but none too much". I don't think that there is anything 'wrong' with us except that we probably don't make the effort that other people do to keep friendships going, or to make new ones.

Hope you are feeling ok? You are lucky to have a lovely dog. I love dogs but as we go away for a few weeks at a time my husband says it would be too expensive to kennel one....deep down I know that is true but still hope to have one some day. X

You sound just like me. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with the outside world. I have great neighbours and a wonderful sister and her family (just come back from cornwall with them and the dogs), but having worked in IT for 25 years, virtually 24/7 work days, I love having control of my life back, since I retires at 50 some 8 years ago. I always wanted a working dog when I retired and I have a loveable rougue of a rescue dog and he goes everywhere with me. But I do sometime like company and would love a holiday with someone new. If it happens it happens but Im not bothered.....yet.

I have just joined this site , like you I lead a solitary life but I do not have a dog due to personal circumstances, and dogs give unconditional love and opportunities for walks so u are very lucky in a way . I have just joined this site and it looks like we have both made the right decision as we are no longer on our own. Hugs

Belated Birthday Wishes. I find I live a 'quiet life' too since my husband died. I certainly know now that his 'friends' were not my friends as I haven't heard from any of them since the funeral. But, hey ho, life goes on.

Trouble is I am finding myself becoming more and more like a hermit, that doesn't even want to go out into the big world.
Response from Lytham lucky made on 29th Apr 2016 18:19:21
No don't become a hermit even a walk around the block smiling at people may get you a new friend friend's are just people you haven't yet met please don't give up. summer is nearly here ha ha as the snow is falling

Happy Birthday for yesterday. I lead quite a solitary life too and most of the time, I'm quite happy that way but you definitely get some very lonely days. Like you, I don't know how I ended up this way.But a lot has to be said for leading your own life without any contradictions or unwanted opinions.

Belated Happy Birthday, my hubby (70) and I (69 next month) have found that although we are active, bright and like meeting people etc, we also are often in solitude with each other. The family also seem to think we have already passed on, but thank goodness for our neighbours. We mingle and chat and the couple next door are particularly friendly. That is our saving grace...

celtwitch,
Belated birthday greetings. You are obviously internet savvy. Use these skills to google U3A. You will find a host of like minded folk all in the same boat, all having found the U3A found each other. Do it now!

Happy Birthday Celtwitch, Hope you and your dog were able to enjoy a lovely meal before settling down to watch some TV after a lovely afternoon walk. Think about contacting your family or an old friend rekindle friendship, it only takes one to make the first move.

Great idea Gmnancy1. Someone has to make the first move - life is too short to have regrets!
