Just joined so I'm introducing myself.

I will be 67 next month and retired from the many different jobs in my working life. I guess that I didn’t ever find my calling. I went to university at age 59 but when it was over it was too late to launch a new career. I wanted to lecture but students don’t want to listen to old fogies, so sadly I put aside that idea and settled into life as an eccentric dog owner.

I live in a beautiful Lancashire valley surrounded by hills that demand they be walked/climbed, how could I refuse?

I would like to do a bit of cycle touring but a recent diagnosis of spondylosis and some hip pain means that I may not be doing a world tour anytime soon!

I’m keen to make some friends as I have been on my own for a very long time now, my daughters don’t bother much with me and I don’t have a partner.I didn’t expect to be so isolated at this time in my life, isn’t it strange the way family and friends seem to forget us when we get past 60?

I will pop in regularly and hope to strike up some friendships.

hi there read your introduction with interest. like you i went to university as a mature student and followed the academic path for years part time until ended up as a lecturer on a two year contract. i hated it not the students they were lovely but the staff were very unfriendly it was so political everyone jostling for the upper hand so you didn't miss out on anything. i too live alone and have done for many years like you my children are all adults now and don't make contact unless asking for something usually financial help! it sounds as if you live in a nice area and that's a positive. i've been ill for the past five years but determined to keep mobile as long as possible i'm now 80 years old can't believe it where did all those years go? i live near the sea and outside is nice and flat so i can walk along the promenade for a while and have decided that when i can't i'll get a nice snazzy little mobile scooter and whizz along for my shopping. good luck

Hi Skercat, I believe that Celtwitch left the website years ago so she won't be answering your query.

Hello. I’m interested in your name, celtwitch. Are you knowledgeable about Celtic witchcraft? I am starting to read about it and would like to meet someone who can point me in the direction of what is valid and what is just marketing. It is so difficult these days to know is what you are reading is valid.

I am a 68 year old woman trying to waste her days as productively as possible.

Hi celtwich !
In the same boat as you.Retired from the railroad.Made good money back then. But the life style not so pretty.Didn't have time for the family. My son might, just might say hi in 3 months or more.He really doesn't want to have anything to do with me. The wife.Still married. But more or less just friends. Friends.Never really had none.Working for the railroad did that.Having wed. / thur. off working nights 33 years.Hard to make friends. Your home, their working.Kind of makes one say, wish i stayed in the navy. When I retired thought i do things i been wanting to do.Like metal detecting for one.Wellllll didn't work out. Soon as i retired, about a month later medical problems one after another.I agree with what ya say about family forget you.MIne forgot me when i went to work for the railroad. They don't look at this.A roof over your head, food in your belly, education, places they went etc.Yes it hard to wake up everyday & nothing to do & no one to talk to. I live in Louisiana,U.S.A. ,The southern part at the bottom.Grew up trapping, shrimp boats, oyster boats,& partying on weekends at the Honky Tonk bars.Came home out the Navy.Allllllllll gone.No one around. I use to speak the cajun french language. With no one around to talk to I lost all of it. Jobs wouldn't let you speak it. They hated it.The world changed for me.I said wish I'd stayed in the Navy.Problem there is,no good retirement.Have to be a Captain or better with 35 plus years to retire from them. Well i wrote a book. Due Take care now.Hope to chat more...

Hi Smokyy

Would your wife let you travel on a Caribbean cruise with a female? Do you even want to cruise?
I am looking for a friend only to share a cabin with. It has to be Princess, but they have a lot of options. Most leave from FL but I have seen one or two from New Orleans. I am very new to this site - so I don't know how anyone connects.

Hi celtwitch, Hope you are well as can be. I am a very similar situation, at 52, and also an eccentric dog owner ! I live in Sussex, estranged from my family, my two sons have now left home, I really feel for you doing the uni, I started a fine art degree distance learning, passed the first unit but struggling with it, I have a few issues with my spine, surgery at age 20 for spinal stenosis and had issues ever since but no further support other than stating I have a Tarlov Cyst on my spine and scoliosis. It is only recently I have looked into Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and a GP finally agreed it could be but 'there isn't anything they can do about it anyway' Take care .

Hi,

I'm new here, just signed up today.

I'm not retired yet, I have 4 more years till that. I'm looking to get connected before retirement. I work with individuals that are in recovery from addictions. Also very deeply connected with the neurodivergent community. Looking to see how to best help those that are in recovery and have an IDD.

Ask away I'll tell you.

Love to cook, read, crafts, time with family and friends, travel, music, movies and theater.

Looking forward to chatting.

Trish

I to have just joined, my age is 76 years young. I have worked most of my life overseas in the offshore oil industry and in the capacity as an health, safety and environmental manager in the oil and gas pipeline section. Upon returning back to the UK l have spent my time in retirement finding it very boring. Due to my overseas working l find that l have very few friends within the UK, l am not lonely in anyway just wish l could meet people on the forum and hold good conversations. If anyone should wish to chat please do.

Interesting. Seems like I'm in similar position-maybe lot in common? I love using my mind especially when it comes to analyzing or problem solving or just plain 'ol learning exploring or joking around. Have a couple of degrees and was making a few friends via pickle ball with with the crap hip and bad neck, shouldn't be doing that now. I'm just 60 and look even younger but in danger of holing up to be old eccentric way before my time. Looking to connect..

Hello, have just joined up. Turned 60 this year and feel as though that has got a lot of weight off my shoulders. Have never felt so optimisitic and raring to go, don't want and can't afford to retire so looking to find ways of keeping the grey matter tuned up and open to possibilities.

Not much family to call upon and none close by, a few good friends but all with family/partners. Am happy with my own company and getting more so, but sometimes it's nice to be having a coffee and a catch up.

Have an eclectic taste in music, enjoy going to gigs (especially on a school night!), listening to recorded music, finding new artists/bands to enjoy.

Enjoy wandering in the countryside, usually with my camera for company - which makes me poor comapny for anyone with me not with a camera. Avebury walks on Christmas or Boxing day are becoming a tradition.

Have been interested in cars, planes, bikes from an early age and am on the committee for a car club of which I was a founder member back in 1990. Have some long term friends from this, but mostly see them at car related events.

Want to be able to play the guitar but attempts so far have sounded like I have two left feet.
