Knighthoods

What's your take on knighthoods? Are they deserved or not? I see Rod Stewart just got one - Is it deserved or should the old fella at the end of my road who has worked tirelessly as a non- paid volunteer for the local hospice For 40 years get one?

I believe people are chosen for their services to community and country, but they need to be nominated by local dignitaries. For a long time I thought nominees chosen were ridiculous, i.e. pop stars, but they do entertain thousands, indirectly provide jobs etc., and there are those who support charitable institutions. They might earn thousands but they do not have to contribute.

I have no idea why these people get a knighthood rather than a 'lesser' honour but at least the title dies with them!

For all of you who believe there are people more deserving of Honours, then why not nominate them. As for Rod Stewart and other musicians, I believe it is based on their contribution to music etc. and the revenue it attracts the same as a number of actors and other celebrities. That doesn't mean I agree but I do know a number of people who have received honours for their contribution to the community and all have been nominated.

I'm sure there are a lot of people out there more deserving of knighthoods. They're handing them out like sweeties. Musicians like Rod have made their millions from the entertainment business, they don't give much back and continue to do it beyond retirement. Is this because they need the money or the applause? His 4th wife now becomes a Lady. If he moves on to wife no 5 does Penny keep her title?

I think these awards are given out to easily. Some of these "rock musicians" have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Rod may be a cleaner cut version of his 1960's/70's self, but a community worker who gives their time, sometimes their own money should be rewarded. One of my friends runs a community centre for those who have no company other than those they see at the centre. She rescues animals, and is also now officially "retired". There are some good people out there.
