Now that the Police have admitted they cannot respond to all mental health calls, isn't it time the NHS did the same?

If it is not to collapse, it must be rationed. Life-saving care and treatment must be prioritised. I think all of these should NOT be free: Cosmetic surgery other than reconstruction after mastectomy Repair of botched surgeries done abroad Treatment of non British nationals Gender re-assignment Professional sports injuries Injuries caused by drink or drugs or while commiting a crime Injuries while taking part in known, high-risk activities.

I totally agree. Injuries or conditions received during additional activities or non medical procedures should be covered under an insurance scheme or some form of medical insurance. The NHS has enough to cope with without having to support the additional costs created by this situation.

If we are allowed to say this in the "woke" ultra PC world we seem to live in, there are too may chiefs and not enough indians in the NHS. We have diversity managers etc in many companies who ensure that employees are of the right ethnicity and sex instead of giving the job to the most suitably qualified person.

People are offended by anything and everything these days and they jump on the mental health bandwagon and say that they are hurt owing to whatever has caused them offence. There surely has to be some compromise between the "grin and bear it" attitude of my generation and the "poor me" attitude of the younger people of today?

I know, through family experiences, that mental health problems are awful and can be debilitating and there are often huge waiting lists for those who need help so there needs to be a priority system for those who need immediate help and those who can wait longer.

It would be difficult to ration treatment on the NHS but it sounds like an excellent idea to charge those who drink and/or take drugs and then drive and cause accidents or who have surgery abroad and then expect the NHS to recify mistakes. The list is endless and we could end up like America where everyone is supposed to have medical insurance - but what about those people who can't afford it?

I worked as a receptionist in a very busy A&E department for 13 years and was amazed when foreigners booked in for treatment and were disgusted because they were told that they would have to pay. We used to ask them, if the positions were reversed, would we get free treatment in their country and the answer was always No.

I'm afraid that this country is seen, by many, as a soft touch. Yes, we need to be compassionate and help people who are genuinely in trouble but there has got to be a way of doing that which is not detrimental to law-abiding citizens who want to live peacefully.

You are completely right. Since we retired, We have been treating ourselves to some "bucket list" holidays including some cruises. Travel insurance is almost 20% of the cost. A good policy is necessary because you know that before treatment even starts, you will have to prove you can and will pay. It doesn't seem to apply here.
