What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?

Over a number of years there has and even more lately been endless adverts asking for money, from children through to animals and onto water and so on. Of course there are many reasons to give money but are we the only ones in England constantly being asked to give money even for other countries through out the world , even in disasters, I too willingly send money to the British Red Cross who do a marvellous job, where I know my donation will get to the most needy of people. But my main concern is why doesn't the governments of some of these countries try and help their own people instead of people here in England constantly being bombarded with begging adverts, what are your views regarding TV begging adverts, and at tea time too?

Some are good causes however the ratio of air time expense to use of donation makes me wonder..Is this mainly a cause to continue to making air time. mp

My sentiments exactly. I get very angry at the way these adverts are strategically timed and aimed at certain age groups who spend most of their time indoors and depend on the tv. I already subscribe to several worthy charities but these annoying adverts play on people's conscience. It's about time they are curtailed and even stopped if necessary.

Yes, esp itv3 all afternoon weekdays during classic coronation street onwards through to MIdsomer Murders and beyond and before, and it's everyday with the guilt tag attached " don't look away" and I for one could not afford a regular donation, but the point is where is the money really going how do we know and why make us feel guilty, this is getting worse especially on itv3!

It is not only shameless, it is scandalous! Charities are spending donations to make blatantly distressing adverts on daytime TV to pressurise vulnerable individuals to part with money they can ill afford!!!!

I HATE those adverts- I am amazed at the salaries that some of the CEOs get and I am disgusted with
the behaviour of some of the staff (reports from abroad).
If they're not asking for a text, they're asking for a bequest in your will and on some channels-notably ITV; they are a complete nuisance- what with them, funeral plans and life policies, not forgetting those dubious food delivery adverts- I am almost tempted to sign up for ad-free TV.
Worse than all this though is the attempts that media companies are making to outdo each other with shock-tactics- I don't need to know how to use a tampon, find out about plastic knickers for adults (whatever happened to pelvic control) see 20 stone plus women dancing around in their underwear or watch bank adverts that seem more interested in mental health than my financial health.
perhaps it works for someone somewhere...

I agree with your comments. I've seen these ads for 50 years. We are a soft touch for money. The other countries should be looking after their people not us. The leaders misuse the resources for their own use.

The post above is typical of English people. As far as they are concerned these Islands and all the people and various countries and cultures are arrogantly called England by them. Even sterling is called 'English money' and whenever you hear them whining and whinging when they are on holiday abroad its invariably them not being too happy because the Greek or French shopkeepers cannot speak English. Never mind.....every old black and white 'British' war film and many of those in colour have 'Engurlund winning the war or standing alone against the baddies. Why did the other nations on these islands ever bother to fight and sacrifice their young people for these ungrateful bums? The sooner England get their isolation Brexit wish the happier everybody else will be.

I'm with you, it is irritating and would probably more effective if it was done a few times a year instead of every day! Here in the US we are bombarded with the Shriners' Hospital, St. Jude, the Jewish people in Israel, the Humane Society--which are all worthy causes but the commercials are sad. Eventually the commercials are muted and the channels are changed.

As good people, we all have causes dear to our hearts and we donate -- we cannot donate to every cause and I resent having to evade their causes.

I have my own charities I contribute to here in UK. The problem for me is I am just immune to them now, even starving children!! I'm sure I'm not alone with this complete begging overload.

I fully fully agree with you ..... Its beginning to take the piss....... Poor dembele give him 2 pound a month and you are paying for fresh drinking water for him........ I live in hull and I'm paying 10 a week for mine........and when you see crying children what you don't see is the parents throw and I mean throw the children on the floor in front of the camera for a bag of rice what they get of the camera crew......I've seen it with my own eyes in Iraq.......

It isn't just this country that is being asked to give, these appeals are international some nations are more generous than others. So sorry that your tea time should be bombarded with begging adverts fro m people who have nothing. Turn the telly off and put a Disney video on.

Why are charity adverts so graphic before the watershed? I switch them off, and use Netflix when the grandchildren visit

If you want to know about charities failings.Type in Google "Red Cross funds after 9-11".
Their failings are astounding,as are their leaders some just short of $500,000.
While we are talking about GOOGLE has anybody had a look at their pictures when you type in "black couple" and then see what comes up when you type in "white couple.Cheers

I agree with you and stopped making donations to charities some years ago when I realised how little of our contributions actually get to the people in need. I ignore the numerous TV adverts. My donations now go only to local charitIes and food banks and I also give goods to selected local charity shops.

Absolutely agree with your comment, I have supported a number of charities during my working life, it was a struggle to free myself after starting my retirement, the various charities would not accept that I wanted to stop paying via DDs, and would only make ad hoc payments. It would be useful to see the breakdown of monies received and paid out by the charities, and the decision making process to allocation of funds to causes.

I am totally fed up, I donated to Unicef on seeing Martin Bell's tv ad, happy to have done so on 2nd April 2020 but I've had 2 phone calls since asking for more money, as a pensioner you know what you can afford, I understand the issues especially since all the bad publicity having worked in the 3rd sector but expected my phone number to be secure and I am very unhappy that it is not

Don’t like begging & generally it’s by over paid celebs probably being paid to do it & if they are not, it is free publicity for them. If people were paid their value, like nurses, doctors firefighters etc & celebs were paid their actual worth, we probably wouldn’t need so many charities
