Streaming TV/On Demand TV

I am a very happy non TV licence holder. I use the internet for all my programme watching and apart from my Netflix subscription, I pay for no other TV. I watch ITV/Chanel 4/Chanel 5 and a multitude of other on demand TV and films using a Roku box. Roku also make the SkyTV NowTV box but because the NowTV box is used to mainly get you to subscribe to NowTV chanels, very little else is available using this box yet the Roku box can be used to get NowTV and over 500 other chanels! If you want to get rid of your satellite/Virgin subscription and you have a normal (non high speed cable) Internet service, get yourself a Roku box from Argos/Currys/PC World/Amazon. It's brilliant and there are so many services to use without the expense of traditional subscription TV services

I'm paying on average £80 per month to virgin media for TV basic package, home telephone and calls and 50Mpbs broadband.. I also pay for a TV licence. As a pensioner what would be the best way to go to cut this bill in half. should I get an outside aerial and freeview box and look for a phone and broadband package only. I generally only view BBC and STV channels and the big bang theory

I would certainly recommend that you get rid of the Virgin package if you only watch programmes that are available on Freeview. Their latest boxes also include a lot of catch-up features too.
Most of us don't really need high speed cable internet either. You will only need high speed cable if there are several of you in the family all using the internet at the same time,
I have a normal, what many people would call slow internet, they guarantee 8mpbs but I regularly get up to 20 mpbs. I can watch On Demand TV/Netflix/All4/ITV etc without any buffering. It is a lot cheaper than cable and there are plenty of providers that offer that in conjunction with landline phone deals.

8mbps sounds like heaven Trevor. I checked my speeds last night when it was dropping out again and I got got the wonderful speed of 1.6 mbps. No wonder I can't watch stuff on line eh?

I would love to do this but with having a super slow internet service as opposed to super fast it's rare that I can watch anything on line 🙁
Watching little pink circles go round and round can get quite tedious after a while lol

I am a bit confused here, I understand that you need a TV licence to watch all television programs, even on a computer, can you please explain how you get away with not having a licence.

I do not watch so called 'live TV' I only watch On Demand programmes. In other words after they have been shown on the network. Also, I cannot use the BBC iPlayer as again I have to have a TV licence to use this service.
I can also watch DVD's without a licence

Hi Trevor,

Like you I have a Roku box and a subscription to Now TV. I particularly like Now Tv because it offers short term contracts to Sky's entertainment, sports and film channels. For example, if you are a sports fan and you want to watch a specific event such as The Ryder Cup, rather than taking out a full sky 12-month subscription you can buy a weekly pass for around £10. Similarly if you want access to a range of tv series you can access their large range of boxed sets for £7 per month and it is easy to cancel your subscription at any time. I tend to use Now TV as a relatively inexpensive occasional supplement to Freeview (I still pay my licence). Without Now TV I would find the Roku of limited use as, apart from the channels listed by you, most of the others are a bit rubbish.

I have to agree with you that there is quite a bit of rubbish on there too, I have a total of 12 chanels installed on my Roku, 2 are music which I do use almost as much as the On Demand programmes.
I also imagine that my choices for entertainment rarely involve sitting in front of a TV simply watching it and being entertained by it. I read an awful lot. As already mentioned I listen to music and have quite a big music collection. I also enjoy the internet, it could be using sites like SilverSurfers or Facebook, twitter and blogging sites though I don't write blogs myself but do enjoy reading some of them.
I often find my evening has gone before I even think of the TV so paying for a licence would be wasting £149 of my meagre budget
