Daily diaries of those who are self-isolating due to Coronavirus

A place where, if you are self-isolating due to worries about Coronavirus, or if indeed you have contracted the virus, you can stay in touch with our community, to tell us how you are coping, share your experience and perhaps lessen your feeling of isolation

It’s a long story, but I live on my own aged 66 and suffer with depression. This enforced isolation is really getting me down. I have no motivation to do anything and the days just seem endless and pointless. I’m sure there are others much worse if than me, and feel for them.

Welcome to this thread where we are all here trying to help each other and offer support in these very challenging times. I hope you can find some comfort here - we may be at home but we should never feel alone, so pop back here whenever you want to ... we can get through this together 🙂

p.s I have just updated this feature on Podcasts - https://www.silversurfers.com/best-of-the-web/culture-best-of-the-web/podcasts-and-radio-shows-to-inspire-learning/ Have you ever listened to one? 🙂

Also Joe Wicks had made a couple of great exercise videos for seniors and you can watch them here - https://www.silversurfers.com/health/diet-exercise/the-body-coach-inspires-seniors-to-get-motivated/ - great for lifting our mood 🙂 Regular exercise is amazing for your health and wellbeing 🙂

Hi FromePhil, The isolation certainly sucks and makes depression worse. I have never thought of myself as depressed but this year I am struggling. In 2018 I lost my mam on 12th April then my twin sister died April 5th, 2019, I have 5 amazing kids and they have rallied around to keep me going but this isolation/ lockdown is sucking all my motivation away as we near the anniversaries and all of the family is separated across the county.

I guess having a son who's birthday fell just before each loss has helped because we made a big deal of it for him by laughing and joking, he is 18 today. Each year that one of my children reached 16 and 18 a family member has died so my son has been anxious and although it is in bad taste we have teased him that this pandemic is his fault. I know humour does not help everyone through difficult times but it does ease it for me, Each day I remind myself that I have my kids and my grandchildren still with me and the love ones I have lost are now pain-free.

I am only 52 lol, I lost a sister aged 50 and my twin was 51 so my eldest daughter set me a challenge to get to 53 in July to break the cycle. I am sure she will direct me to keep going after that too 🙂

If you or anyone else needs someone to talk to I am a good listener but I do talk a lot lol. Take care of yourself and keep your chin up 😀

Having shown my appreciation by clapping for the NHS staff.I would like to also show appreciation for fellow silversurfers who are helping their elderly neighbours as they aren.t exactly youngters themselves.

It is extremely frustrating not to be able to help as a mild asthmatic aged 68 my daughter has banned me from going to the shops .Of course I am grateful to have family nearby.

I have been logging on to silver surfers far more frequently and thankyou and your team for keeping the chat going it really does provide a sense of community

Hi Joy. Weird times indeed. Just think in 100 years they will all be talking about us in history lessons. What will they be saying? How well we coped or not? Or will they say what on earth were they thinking. Science and technology advance so rapidly nowadays we will probably be their medieval ancestors!

Same around here. I am attributing it to the change in the weather. Hopefully it will make all the people ignoring the advice to stay at home from doing whatever they feel like. Either that or the police are out with their ticket books. It really is eerie.

I share your frustration of hanging on the telephone I am trying to contact my computer repair provider .There is a 50 min waiting time which has remained at 50 mins all day.
In the end I sent an E Mail as I wanted a record of the date it went faulty as it is still under guarantee
until June. I can expect a response in the next 6 days. Whilst this is a minor inconvience as it is semi useable it has been good to have a mini rant rather than shout at the cat who like myself is getting to old to tolerate this change of personality.
If anyone knows why my screen is covered in multi coloured lines and 2 50p size black blobs I would love to hear from you Thankyou.

That happened to me a few years ago, Yodama, so I was able to phone them and get help straight away. The chap told me that it was because I was using Mozilla Firefox to access the internet and he told me to use Google Chrome - installed that and no problems until today when all I got after I had logged in on the first page (name and card number) was a completely blank screen. I couldn't log out so had to close it down. Left it for an hour and tried again and managed to log on without a problem. There could be loads more people using the website now - good luck.

How sad, Lionel. I used to live in Alwoodley, which is probably the area in Leeds which you refer to. I've just been reading about a university student who dressed up in striped pyjamas for a fancy=dress party and said he was representing the Holocaust. He thought it was funny ........... until the media got hold of the photos and his name. What is this world coming to?
Response from CaroleAH made on 26th Mar 2020 16:52:46
I'm reading a book called "Inherit The Truth" by a wonderful lady called Anita Lasker-Wallfisch. It's a memoir about her childhood and internment initially in Auschwitz-Birkenau and then in Bergen-Belsen. She managed to survive because she played the cello and they needed a cellist in the camp orchestra. She is well into her nineties now but is a very eloquent speaker and she also has a son, Raphael, who is an internationally famous cellist.

Good day one and all. I live in The Netherlands in a suburb called Voorburg, which is next to The Hague. I am British but have lived in 8 different countries. I find it quite difficult self isolating as I am a creature who loves to be out and about. I do not know any other English people here although I have been here some years.
We have the same problem as in England here with people being greedy, especially with buying toilet rolls and not all the foodstuffs you want can you find. My husband just told me that in the south of the country where the town of Baarle Nassau is divided between Holland and Belgium the shops on the Belgian side are closed and the ones on the Dutch side are open - where is the logic here!!!
I had to go out this morning to get my blood checked and was the first patient as wanted to avoid 'the rush' later.
Lovely sunny weather here but with a cold wind.
We have satellite t.v. so watch all the English programmes, which is a delight to me.
love to hear from people as miss the English chat and sense of humour!
Please all take care.

Hello, Berri!
The weather has been good for the past few days which has allowed me to get out in the garden. I love this time of the year when the spring flowers are beginning to bloom. If the good weather continues I plan to paint the garden fence, but I think colder weather is on the way
Keep well during this difficult time.

Today I have found gold in the airing-cupboard ............ not quite the 24 carat type but three bars of lovely soap which I had put in there to make the bed-linen smell nice. 🙂
Response from SilverBlue made on 24th Mar 2020 22:59:18
What a lovely find Carole, especially as there is little or no choice in the shops
Response from CaroleAH made on 24th Mar 2020 23:15:22
Hate the smell of Jeyes Fluid, Lionel, but can quite understand the need for it in those circumstances.
I agree SilverBlue and evidently real soap and water is better for the environment (instead of using the liquid soap in plastic bottles) and is more efficient than hand sanitiser, although I keep a little bottle of that in the car for my hands when I have touched anything outside.
Response from Sue - Silversurfers Assistant Editor made on 25th Mar 2020 09:08:32
Lucky you Carole, yes I had heard of that trick putting soap in draws etc to make things smell nice hopefully there is still
some smell left when you use the soap.!!
Keep safe

Hello Silvers!. I, am new and like all am getting a little cabin fever. What I really would like to know is, do you or do you know of anyone who actually has the virus? So much about it on the news yet I know of no one nor anyone who knows someone (I know that sounds odd)

Hi Wcrester
Now you know of someone who has had the virus. I am just about out of quarantine and am feeling absolutely fine. I was very lucky to have mild symptoms. So now, like you, I am starting to feel cabin fever. I was so looking forward to being able to get out again.

Well said Lionel. Not often I give anyone a red thumbs down but this is blatant rubbishy advertising and why would a 24 year old chap join Silversurfers unless he was preying on the natural fears we all have in this current situation.
