What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?

Over a number of years there has and even more lately been endless adverts asking for money, from children through to animals and onto water and so on. Of course there are many reasons to give money but are we the only ones in England constantly being asked to give money even for other countries through out the world , even in disasters, I too willingly send money to the British Red Cross who do a marvellous job, where I know my donation will get to the most needy of people. But my main concern is why doesn't the governments of some of these countries try and help their own people instead of people here in England constantly being bombarded with begging adverts, what are your views regarding TV begging adverts, and at tea time too?

I too am fed up with these adverts! We gave millions with live aid and it seems to have made no difference at all! Surely the governments of these countries could supply water at least! And what about the millions that blm got in donations to help black people! Lenny Henry dosent help by saying white saviours are not welcome! So I’m white and from now on I will only give to animal charities!!

How many many billions of UK £££s have the African continent had in support for say just water aid since the 1960s? they could have built pipe lines to every village and every home every street every were in Africa and swimming pools in every town including a nice home for everyone there....yet they have progressed ZERO! what a con! whoever gets this money does not want it to stop......the uk is the main target for cons and swindles and beggars from that continent....those getting the money will never change and will never stop laughing at us!

Yes I am sick fed up with the constant begging for water or eye operations or helping young girls from married men! We’re are blm? Where is all the money from the charity shops that are in our high streets by the hundreds going? The bosses of these charities are on very high salaries paid for by the donars who think every penny goes to help the needy when in fact one pence out of a pound goes!! Most of the governments in these countries are corrupt so aid money never reaches the poor! Why doesn’t india pass a law preventing old men marrying young girls? It’s child abuse!
Response from BRBob made on 12th May 2022 12:17:00
The Government six years ago said it would stop sending foreign aid to India
FCDO’s development budget to India will rise to £55.3million in 2021/22.
Why are we giving money to a country with nuclear power and a space industry?
All charity money in aid of children should be spent on sterilisation and contraception, that would put an end to the begging.
I give voluntary donations to the RNLI and the Poppy Appeal.

I personally think they should be banned. We never used to have adverts like these. It also includes funeral directors too

Just watched an ad from Save The Children wanting £3 to treat a child with pneumonia.
Their CEO earns £230,104 pa and 386 other staff earn £60,000+ pa.
Just the CEO's salary alone could treat 76,701 children.
Their annual income is £981.9 million.
With that amount of money coming in each year, why are children still suffering and why do they still need us to ante up more cash all the time.
Truth is, the majority of money goes on salaries and admin. The proportion that actually reaches children is small by comparison.
Much better to give money to local charities, like foodbanks, as I do. (The fact that we need foodbanks in this country is another scandal by itself.)
Response from WHT made on 14th Feb 2022 15:55:02
Quite agree JackieBrown.

Understand that the advertising is national but like you say is the top hierachy that get the benefit. Is so much money that goes on 'admin' or 'ceo' costs. Charity is exactly that 'Charity' I feel that the people who do run the charities should do that job for 'half the price of their salary/wage'.
Other thing that bugs me is there is NEVER EVER any update on what has been done in what country etc; how much raised, How much needed. But for the general joe bloggs we are expected to just blindly 'GIVE GIVE GIVE'.

Also the fact that once you start giving to a charity ie: £3 a month the next month it's give £5 and so on and so forth. If I was to give £3 to every charity that asked I'd be 6ft under!
Response from BRBob made on 8th Mar 2022 10:27:05 > @WHT
Every child you save by feeding is saved for breeding!
£3 this year will be £30 in 20 years time, spend the money on contraception and sterilisation, problem solved.

Yes there are to many charity adds on both radio and television. Its always the same a tearful child or a hobbling along with deformed hooves. What a good percentage of the general public are unaware of is the amount that these CEO's receive. A lot of charity workers who give their time free and who work hard to supplement the CEO's salary. Most earn more than the Prime Minister for instance NSPCC £162000 and Cancer research £240000. I wonder how many Ladies who run and give their time to these charities know exactly how much is being bleed from the Charity they are supporting. It is now time for the Charity Commission to clamp down on them but as they have already admitted it is now out of control.

Here here. I agree wholeheartedly with what you say. We are being bombarded with begging on TV and radio. Won't be long till they keep popping up on our phones

I don't give money willy nilly. Not that I have much to give. But I think people who beg for it don't deserve it.

Look at the MILLIONS of dollars/pounds they spend on advertisements, actors, commercials, speakers, billboards, news ad's, etc..... WHY aren't they putting all that money into their charity.......IF it really is a charity.

The fundamental fact of charities is, 95% of the money they take in goes for "administration costs". This money is governed by the executive level, and THEY are the ones that dole out the money for projects and such, while stuffing most of this money into their private bank accounts. The other 5% goes for paid employees, offices, and less that 1% goes to the actual people, places, or causes they advertise for.

If you want to give to a charity, make SURE you investigate it fully before handing over any money to it.

As for their adverts being saturated in the media.........this should tell you EXACTLY where the money is going to.

Yes exactly! The ''pressure people feel'' as that is the whole concept of the ad - to pressurise you into giving. Is the reason I don't. I do believe that countries are in need but I don't believe their propaganda tactics.

I MUTE the tv! Simple. If you were to sign up and donate to every ad for charity then you'd not have anything left to live on. To me it's a legitimate scam. Advertising has never been so good. All the more reason for you to keep your head on your shoulders when it comes to donating. Have you ever checked out how much the admin get to what the actual % is that goes to the cause? Think you would rethink to what and how you donated.

I used to be employed by a charity who ran daycare centres for the elderly.
The elderly day care users were charged a fortune for these services and I was disgusted to find out how much the office staff at both local and and head office level were paid. The people who actually worked at the centres were not paid very much at all. If this happened in the charity I worked for what happens in all the others?
I now work as a volunteer in a charity shop which is great fun for me and does good for others too.

I well remember a friend who had given to cancer research by direct debit for quite a few years, out of the blue she received a phone call from cancer research asking if she could put the amount up from £5 per month to £20.my friend replied sorry I can not afford it you see I have been off work as I have been having treatment as I have breast cancer, to which the women replied well shall I phone in a couple of months you might be back at work . At this my friend was so livid she hung up went on her bank account and cancelled direct debit. Me ? I ignore all the adverts I stick to helping my friends out and the British legion
Response from PurpleHat made on 6th Dec 2021 22:01:43
I totally agree, fund-raising tactics such as this are counter-productive. I have cancelled Direct Debits for the same reason, asking for more and more, or unreasonable amounts beyond ones purse.

I actually turn the TV over when I see these ads ( it's like Charity Porn looking at the suffering of others )
Before the advert the should be forced to display the Pay of the chief executives of the Chairty concerned and how much of peoples donations actually reach the people concerned .

I now prefer to help local charities staffed by volunteers.

I , too, have hardened myself ,and grown to disregard almost all of the begging ads now, in fact I have had to write to some organisations and tell them to stop mailing me as it is getting too much. My purse is limited . I will not be made to feel guilty all the time I have worked for what I have, and give what I can.
I have my chosen Charities which I regularly support, but I do not want unsolicited packs of Christmas cards, Fluffy toys, more literature and Photographs I would rather the money this costs is used for the purposes I gave it. This will not make me give more, rather it will stop me from giving as it seems wasteful. A small thankyou letter once a year is plenty.

For my part, I would close down DFID. But, before it closed, I would despatch every civil servant employed there, around this country. To every hospice and charity, that can and do save the NHS and government billions every year. And help thousands of people. And give them a share of the £14 billion. And also that other obscene waste, HS2.. And take all charity, gambling, and funeral ads off TV.
About time, the people of this country came first.
Response from anneridgway made on 27th Sep 2021 11:59:50
I totally agree that all the charity, gambling and funeral ads should be removed from the box; also that people living here should come first for a change.

Hello Anne, as for my self, I only support the Battle of Britain memorial flight, and the salvation army. And the local hospice that does such wonderful work.

Totally sick of the constant barrage of over 50's life insurance, cremation insurance and all the charity begging adverts shown during a pandemic where NOBODY has any spare money at hand. Why aren't the tv watchdogs clamping down on this "license to rob" overdrive?

I agree, many families in this country suffering and needing help. The amount of years wateraid have been asking for hep makes me wonder why the countries still don't have water. Look at the floods in both England and Wales, I didn't see any other country sending us aid. I always support the salvation army as I know they support people in this country and do a good job. I used to support the red cross until they banned christmas displays in their shop.

I think begging on television should be made illegal as homeless people get arrested and prosecuted for the same thing but the famous people doing the television commercials do not and I think that is really unfair and actually disgusting!!!!
